Implants are titanium bases similar in size to the roots of natural teeth and placed in the jaws where natural teeth are missing.
With dental implants we can restore the masticatory, aesthetic and vocal function of the mouth when one, some or all teeth have been lost.
Treatments with dental implants are carried out following 5 basic stages, which are:
- clinical examination,
- x-ray study
- surgical phase,
- the osseointegration phase and finally
- the prosthetic phase (all-on-4 (mobile full denture on implants), single crown or bridge on implants)
According to the international literature, successful osseointegration of dental implants reach very high success rates that reach 98% for the lower jaw and 95% for the upper jaw.
What does the long life of implants depend on?
The skills of the doctor, the correct placement and the reliable implant company are some of the key success factors and are ensured by me.
At the same time, the lifespan of the implants depends equally on your own care.
Although implants, thanks to their construction material, are not at risk of being damaged by caries, nor can they cause a toothache, the success of implants depends on their integration with the jaw, which can be affected due to the accumulation of microbes.
If plaque germs are not systematically removed by daily tooth brushing, use of mouthwash and regular cleaning by the dentist, an infection of the gums can occur which will lead to inflammation around the implants, the so-called peri-implantitis. When peri-implantitis remains untreated, it is possible to even lose the implant.
Therefore, it is essential to follow oral hygiene guidelines if you want to ensure the maximum lifespan of your implants.
At the same time, another factor that affects the lifespan of implants is smoking. Success rates in smokers are still high, but are lower compared to non-smokers.
